What is Blepharoplasty? Revitalising Tired Eyes with Eyelid Surgery at Adnova Clinic
Tired, drooping, or puffy eyelids can make you look older and more fatigued than you feel. Blepharoplasty, commonly known as eyelid surgery, is a popular cosmetic procedure that revitalises the appearance of the eyes by addressing excess skin, fat, and muscle in the upper and/or lower eyelids. At Adnova Clinic, the premier specialist day surgery centre on the UK South Coast, blepharoplasty helps patients achieve a more youthful, refreshed, and alert look while also offering functional benefits in appropriate cases.
Adnova Clinic utilises state-of-the-art equipment and facilities. Our medical staff and surgeons are highly trained to provide patients with the best possible standard of care. The clinic was founded by experienced plastic surgeons Charles Durrant and Simon Heppell, who between them have over forty years of experience. Both are full members of BAPRAS and BAAPS, are on the GMC Specialist Register, and hold the FRCS(Plast) qualification. Consultant Plastic Surgeon Raina Rodrigues, who specialises in facial aesthetic and rejuvenation surgery, also offers expertise in upper and lower blepharoplasty. All procedures take place in our modern, CQC-registered facility at Eagle Point, Little Park Farm Road, Fareham (near Southampton), designed specifically for adult day-case surgical patients. What is Blepharoplasty?
Blepharoplasty is a surgical procedure designed to rejuvenate the appearance of the eyes by addressing issues such as excess skin, fat, and muscle in the upper and/or lower eyelids. It can be performed on the upper lids, lower lids, or both, depending on the individual patient’s needs. The surgery results in a brighter, more rested appearance. This surgical intervention is sought after for its aesthetic benefits and also for its functional advantages. In cases where sagging eyelid skin obstructs the visual field, blepharoplasty can significantly improve vision, making daily activities easier and more comfortable.
The procedure is ideal for men and women who feel their eyes make them look tired and/or older. Many patients report looking more awake and rejuvenated after surgery. Blepharoplasty is one of the most requested facial rejuvenation procedures because it delivers noticeable yet natural-looking results with relatively minimal downtime. It is particularly effective for addressing the signs of ageing around the eyes. For some individuals, excess upper eyelid skin can obstruct peripheral vision, making daily tasks such as driving or reading more difficult. Blepharoplasty at Adnova Clinic not only enhances aesthetics but can also provide important functional benefits by lifting heavy eyelid skin and opening up the eye area. Full details of the procedure are available on our dedicated blepharoplasty page.
Who is a Good Candidate for Blepharoplasty at Adnova Clinic?
You may be a suitable candidate for blepharoplasty at Adnova Clinic if you have excess, sagging skin on the upper eyelids that impairs vision or creates a heavy appearance; have puffy bags or loose skin under the eyes that make you look constantly tired; are in good overall health; and have realistic expectations about the results. You may also wish to refresh your facial appearance without undergoing more extensive surgery.
During your consultation at our clinic near Southampton, one of our expert surgeons will assess your eyes, discuss your goals, and determine whether upper, lower, or combined blepharoplasty is the best option for you. We take time to address any concerns you may have about the procedure, recovery, or scarring, ensuring you feel fully informed and confident. This thorough assessment helps us tailor the surgery to your unique facial anatomy and desired outcome, considering factors such as skin quality, muscle tone, and overall facial harmony. Before any surgery at Adnova Clinic, you will have a friendly consultation with one of our surgeons where you can discuss how the procedure might be tailored to meet your unique needs. The Blepharoplasty Procedure at Adnova Clinic
Blepharoplasty is typically performed as a day-case procedure under general or local anaesthetic. The surgery usually takes 1–2 hours depending on whether both upper and lower eyelids are treated. Hospital stay is a day case. There are no drains, The sutures use dot close the wound may be either absorbable, meaning they need to be removed, or non-absorbable. Teh latter means that they need to be removed by one of our specialist nurses one weeks after the surgery. This will be discussed with you during your consultation.
The surgical technique for blepharoplasty involves making precise incisions along the natural creases of the eyelids to ensure minimal scarring and optimal healing. Once the excess tissue has been removed, the incisions are meticulously closed, resulting in a seamless and natural-looking outcome. For upper eyelid surgery, the incision is placed in the natural crease of the lid so that excess skin and fat can be addressed while tightening the area for a more open, youthful look. For lower eyelid surgery, the approach allows removal or repositioning of fat and tightening of skin while keeping scars discreet. Our highly trained surgical team uses advanced techniques to minimise scarring and achieve natural-looking results.
All procedures are carried out in our modern, CQC-registered facility with a strong emphasis on patient safety and comfort. Recovery and Aftercare at Adnova Clinic
Recovery from blepharoplasty is relatively straightforward. Most patients experience mild swelling and bruising that subsides within the expected timeframe. Return to work is typically 1–2 weeks and return to exercise is 6 weeks. T
While recovery from blepharoplasty is typically swift, with minimal downtime, patients may experience temporary side effects such as swelling, bruising, and dryness. These symptoms can be effectively managed with prescribed medications and the application of cold compresses, allowing patients to enjoy the long-term benefits of a refreshed and rejuvenated eye area. Your Adnova surgeon may provide advice to help with the recovery process, which is designed to shorten the timeframe. This could include:
- Clean the eyelids with prescribed ointment or use prescribed eyedrops.
- Elevate the head when at rest.
- Reduce swelling through the application of a cold pack or other cold item wrapped in a towel to the affected area.
- Take pain relief such as paracetamol following the surgery.
- Protect the eyes from harsh light and wind by wearing sunglasses.
Your surgeon will likely advise that you keep your head raised in a steady position for roughly two weeks after the procedure. Sleeping in this way will help prevent further swelling and discomfort around the eyes. This can be achieved with pillows arranged around the head. It is often recommended that those who have recently had blepharoplasty surgery take care to limit their TV viewing, reading, computer use, and other activities that could place strain on the eyes. It is recommended that patients wait for around a week before washing their face. When you do come to wash your face, take care to use lukewarm water and apply moderate force when drying.
Our dedicated team provides comprehensive aftercare support, including detailed guidance and follow-up appointments. We remain available to answer questions throughout your recovery journey, ensuring you achieve the best possible outcome. The clinic’s patient-focused approach means support is available whenever needed during recovery. Further information on recovery can be found on the blepharoplasty procedure page.
Benefits of Blepharoplasty at Adnova Clinic
Patients often experience brighter, more youthful and rested-looking eyes; improved peripheral vision if upper eyelid skin was obstructing sight; reduced appearance of tiredness or ageing around the eyes; and enhanced overall facial harmony and self-confidence. Results can be long-lasting.
This surgical treatment can also be used to correct drooping upper eyelids, reduce under-eye bags, or eliminate puffiness. A skilled surgeon, such as those at Adnova Clinic, can customise the surgery to achieve the desired outcome. The functional benefits, such as improved vision and reduced eye strain when excess skin obstructs the visual field, are often as valuable as the aesthetic improvements. Patients frequently report feeling more energised and positive after surgery, as their eyes no longer convey tiredness or ageing. With proper care and realistic expectations, the results of blepharoplasty can last for many years.
Our surgeons take great care to ensure scars are hidden in natural creases, resulting in minimal visible evidence of surgery. This attention to detail, combined with our comprehensive aftercare programme, helps patients achieve the refreshed, vibrant appearance they desire while maintaining a natural look that enhances rather than changes their unique facial character. Whether you are seeking subtle refinement or more noticeable rejuvenation, blepharoplasty at Adnova Clinic can be tailored to meet your individual goals and lifestyle needs. The surgery is performed with precision to preserve the natural shape of the eyes, avoiding an overly tight or surprised look. Many of our patients comment that friends and family notice they look well-rested without realising they have had surgery, which is the hallmark of a successful blepharoplasty.
Many patients combine blepharoplasty with other procedures such as facelift or necklift for comprehensive facial rejuvenation. At Adnova we also offer different procedures that will help you change your face, these include Rhinoplasty, Facelift, Necklift, and Pinnaplasty.
